For Lent I’ve decided to give up spending money on make-up… This is a huge deal for me. I have given myself a bit of leeway so I can repurchase any essentials (primer, concealer etc) but I refuse to buy anything unnecessary. So, no new eyeshadows, lipsticks or blushes for me anytime soon but I am excited to see if I manage to complete this. Saying this, I did go on a mini spending spree for some new skin care and cosmetics products before Lent started… Is that cheating? Who knows!

I love The Body Shop. They are such a great company and have amazing values. They genuinely care so much about their suppliers, their colleagues and their customers. You can read all about their values, ethics and campaigns here. Of course, I also love them for their products! I remember going to The Body Shop with my nana and mum when I was little so I’ve used their products on and off for years. Last year I was struggling with oily skin just before Summer and bought almost the entire Tea Tree range. I really enjoy using this range but found it can be very drying for my skin. It is incredible for dealing with blemishes and breakouts though… I guess you win some and you lose some. At the end of February, I was meeting a friend in town and had some time to kill so naturally, I found myself in The Body Shop. After a chat with a really friendly colleague, I was recommended to try the Seaweed range. There was a 3 for 2 offer on so I picked up the Deep Cleansing Gel Wash, Pore-Cleansing Exfoliator and the Oil-Control Overnight Gel. The Seaweed range restores balance and controls any excess oils, I also love the smell… It’s so fresh! The first time I used these products I was so impressed. I woke up the next morning and my breakouts were less red and my skin felt so soft without being oily. I’m excited to see the results I’ll get if I keep using them.

When I was paying for the products, the colleague told me I had vouchers to use with my loyalty card. I had £5 to spend on anything in store so picked up a Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash because I knew I was running low on my current one. As I said above, this range can be very drying but I do love using it every now and again to target blemishes and at £6 for 250ml, I can’t complain!

I also picked up Dark Angels from LUSH. Another company with great ethics and values! Everyone knows how amazing (and sometimes overpowering) LUSH stores smell. I tried the Dark Angels cleanser when I was at my friend’s back in January and I was so impressed after only two uses so knew I had to buy a pot for myself. Dark Angels is packed with charcoal; black sugar; rhassoul mud; and avocado, sandalwood and rosewood oils. These ingredients ensure a deep cleanse and exfoliation while keeping the skin moisturised and glowing. I was a bit sceptical when I first saw it… I mean, the cleanser is black. Please don’t let this put you off though. You need to be thorough and make sure you don’t have any black residue left but it’s so worth it!

MAC eyeshadows are a bit of an obsession for me right now. I love buying their Pro Palette Refill Pans for £10. These are magnetic and can be put into the Pro Palette Compacts. I have about 10 single shadows and wanted to purchase a neutral transition shade to add to my palette. My bestie had recommended one to me and after speaking to an in-store MAC artist the recommendation was confirmed. I bought Texture. On the MAC site this is described as a peachy-brown with shimmer and it’s a velvet finish. This colour is gorgeous and the perfect addition to my palette.

The last product I bought during my mini haul was Estee Lauder ‘The Smoother’ Universal Perfecting Primer. I spoke to the make-up artist at the Estee Lauder counter in Debenhams and due to my combination/oily skin she recommended either this primer or ‘The Mattifier’ Shine Control Perfecting Primer. She was lovely and gave me samples of both. I did use both samples but as soon as I felt the texture of the Smoother, I knew it was the one. This primer kept my make-up pretty much perfect from 7am to 9pm. This involved a half-day placement in a primary school, an afternoon in uni and a room tidy. I was super impressed. Obviously I had to buy the full size product and I am so excited to use it regularly!

  1. I love the Body Shop’s Seaweed range. I’ve been using the gel wash, toner, and overnight gel and from the first time I put it on, I noticed a reduction in redness. It’s great because I’ve finally found something that works and doesn’t irritate my skin!

      1. Me too. Next time I go into The Body Shop, I might pick up the exfoliator and try it. I don’t think it is as wide ranging as some of the other ranges but it is better.
