Is there anything better than discovering new make-up products?! I will probably reiterate this every time I post about make-up but I am not a make-up artist. This post contains the products I love and wear on a day-to-day basis but I’m not claiming they are the best products out there, they’re just what I’ve come to love and what seem to work for me!
Over the past year or so my skin type has changed from normal to combination/oily and it drives me insane! I hate it and it really makes life more difficult (I’m not even apologising for the dramatics). The first product I apply after cleansing my face is MAC Oil Control Lotion. Last Summer I got my make-up done by one of the great in-store make-up artists and this product was used and recommended to me then. At the moment, I only have the travel size, this was mainly due to two up-coming holidays I had when I made the purchase. I have really noticed a difference when using this moisturiser, it keeps my skin hydrated under my primer and foundation but does as you’d expect by keeping oil at bay.
I’ve tried quite a few primers in the past year. About 18 months ago, I wasn’t using one at all and didn’t see the point but now I can’t imagine my routine without one. For a while I was using Benefit Porefessional and I did like it and repurchase it a few times but it’s beginning to bore me. Having said this, I would recommend it and for the most part is kept my skin oil-free and my make-up stayed put. It’s just no longer wowing me and I’m on the hunt for something new and exciting.
My number-one holy grail foundation has to be MAC Face and Body. I have this in two shades, C2 for when I’m pale and C4 for when I have a tan. My bestie bought this in Summer 2015 and recommended it. This is a sheer coverage foundation but you can build it up for a fuller coverage without it going patchy. MAC claim this foundation gives skin a satin finish and personally I find this really versatile. My skin isn’t left too dewy or too matte so I can change it up depending on the primer or powder I use. I wear Face and Body regardless of the season although I do have a few other foundations if I want really full coverage or luminious-looking skin. I also have to mention the price, it’s incredible value for money! It comes in two sizes, 50ml at £23.50 or 120ml for £29.50. You don’t have to be a mathematician to realise 120ml works out at better value but whichever size you opt for you’re getting a lot of product for your £!
I am a firm believer that concealer is EVERYONE’s best friend. I use MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NC25. I cannot say enough good things about this product, I love it! It provides medium to full matte coverage and lasts up to 15 hours, which I can vouch for. I’ve repurchased this a few times and will continue to do so. (I do have to say I recently purchased Tarte Cosmetics Shape Tape Concealer but I haven’t used this enough to decide how I feel about it yet!) MAC Prep & Prime Highlighter is another product I love when it comes to concealer. It’s incredible at brightening my under-eye without going OTT. I have this in medium plus.
Who doesn’t love a fab-u-lous setting powder? My current go-to is RCMA No Colour Powder. You get so much product for your money, 85g is just £10.50. To put this into context, MAC Prep & Prime Transparent Finishing Powder is £21 for 8g… Surely that’s a no brainer? The packaging for the RCMA powder isn’t great so I bought some containers from amazon that come with a screw lid and a sifter. This makes it so much easier to use.
Early last year, Urban Decay blessed us all by releasing their brand new Beached Bronzer in two shades. As soon as I saw the packaging I fell in love and knew I had to make a purchase. This is a really silky-smooth matte bronzer and it’s to-die-for! I have it in the darker shade, Bronzed and it’s gorgeous. It gives such a natural sun-kissed glow. I’ve hit pan on my one and will definitely buy this bronzer again.
I’m not going to mention eyeshadow’s because I have a few palettes and want to dedicate a whole blog post to my faves! When it comes to eyeliner I have one firm favourite, and that is MAC Liquidlast Liner. My wonderful auntie bought this for me when I was 15 and I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve repurchased it. The longevity of this product is incredible. We’ve all had those (drunken) nights where we’ve fallen asleep in our make-up and seriously, I’ve woken up the next morning and my eyeliner still looks like it did the night before!
Mascara mascara mascara… I have a love/hate relationship with mascara. I have quite short eyelashes so I really struggle to find a great mascara but I do currently have two I’m loving! Benefit They’re Real & MAC Upward Lash. These are both fab on my lashes, I definitely get volume and length with both unlike some others I’ve tried. My one gripe with Benefit They’re Real is how tough it is to come off… I know this can potentially be seen as a positive but I lose eyelashes whenever I try to remove it! (Yes, I know, I know… They have a specially formulated remover but I wasn’t that impressed when I tried it so I’m not keen to spend money on it!)
Eyebrows are so important. I can’t stand a make-up look if someone’s eyebrows haven’t been groomed and filled in… I’m not talking really thick or the ‘instagram brow’ but you’ve got to add something, right? I have to admit though, I hate doing my brows. I know they’re supposed to be sisters and not twins but sometimes my brows don’t even look like friends. Two products I’ve come to love are Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz and Dipbrow Pomade. I have both of these products in Chocolate and they make filling in my brows fairly quick and easy. To accompany the Dipbrow Pomade I use the Anastasia Beverly Hills Large Synthetic Duo Brow Brush #12. This helps with a precision application and has a spoolie on the opposite end which I love.
In terms of blush and highlight, I don’t really have a ‘go-to’. I have a few blushes I love: MAC Powder Blush in Lovecloud and Peaches, and Estée Lauder Pure Colour Envy Blush in Peach Passion. My all-time favourite highlighter is Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop (unfortunately, I think this was limited edition) but I do also love the Anastasia Beverly Hills glow kit in Sundipped. I also have a couple of MAC mineralize skin finishes that are great… I can feel a blog post dedicated to highlighters coming up.
My most used product? MAC Prep & Prime Fix+, I love that there are so many different uses for this product. It’s what I use to dampen my make-up sponge if I’m using one, I use it to make eyeshadow more pigmented and it’s how I finish all of my make-up looks. It’s so refreshing and hydrating and I cannot recommend enough!
So, there you have it, my top beauty picks that I always reach for. Have you tried any of these? Can you recommend anything you think I’d love?
