It was only a matter of time before Slimming World popped up on my blog! I want to share my Slimming World journey and hopefully inspire, even one person, to lead a healthier lifestyle.
I’m not one of those people who was skinny as a child and piled the weight on during school. I was always the biggest. Although this did get worse as I got older. When I started earning my own money I would spend so much of it on anything unhealthy. Bags of chocolate, packets of biscuits, and tubs of ice cream. In my final year of academy, my friends and I could drive so we’d go to Subway for lunch and then we’d go somewhere else and get ice-cream. Not exactly the best choices! When I turned 18 the weight continued to pile on. Going out 3-4 times a week drinking prosecco, cocktails, spirits, and shots and buying greasy food at the end of the night was a recipe for disaster.
I always put on a brave face and pretended my size didn’t bother me, I’ve danced since I was 2 so was very proud of being able to do the splits even at my heaviest weight of 17 stone. Yes, I was fit but my eating habits were out of control and I was by no means healthy. The end of 2014 played host to a few ‘lightbulb’ moments regarding my weight. I was in denial about buying a size 22 dress for my brother’s MSc graduation. We can joke about it now but when we got the photos from that day, it was awful. I look horrific. I’m just thankful I’m not at my heaviest weight anymore and we can get a better, and slimmer, family photo at my own graduation. For Christmas Day my mum made a chocolate cheesecake, I remember pulling the plate in front of me and posing for a photo as if I was going to demolish the whole thing. When I saw the photo it really hit me that my size wasn’t a joke.
I decided 2015 was going to be my year, I made the New Year’s resolution. “I will lose weight”. January rolled around and I tried my best. I went to the gym and I tried to eat healthy. But I didn’t really know what I was doing… Over the month, I only lost a few pounds and was quite disappointed. A Slimming World group had just opened where I live and my neighbour had been going along. She was losing weight and loving what she was eating. She’d show me photos of the meals she’d make and they looked incredible, not like ‘diet’ food at all. In March 2015, my boyfriend and I took the plunge and decided to join the group where he stays. I was so nervous that first night. I stood at the front door and said that I’d changed my mind and I didn’t want to go. My boyfriend convinced me it would be a good thing and that we should go along and see what Slimming World was all about. From that night, everything changed. It may be very cliché to say but Slimming World is not a diet and it really irks me when people call it one! It really is a lifestyle change. I’m never hungry and I can still eat everything I want, just in moderation. In my first week on plan I lost 6.5lbs and even had a Chinese takeaway. Within 6 weeks I had lost over 1.5 stone (21lbs), it was great and I could feel that I was happier and more energetic week-by-week. I lost over 5.5 stone (77lbs) in just over a year. I haven’t felt deprived at all. I can enjoy a takeaway or glass of prosecco at the weekend and still get a loss at the scales through the week. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine I’d be able to walk into a shop and buy clothing in a size 10 or borrow from my friends but now, that’s my reality.
In May 2016, I was invited to Slimming World’s Head Office in Derby as one of thirty-two semi-finalists for Young Slimmer of the Year. The day was an absolute whirlwind, I met so many inspirational people. To top the whole experience off, after telling my weight loss story I was short-listed to the final 8 competitors! For the whole of the UK. Although I didn’t win I am so proud of myself for this day and it’s one I’ll never forget.
Over the past year, I’ve gained a few lbs back… I had a really busy 2016 with holidays, visiting family and my 21st birthday, but I’m not worried. I know any gain won’t be around for long when I’m following Slimming World. Joining my group is one of the best things I have ever done. Slimming World has put me in touch with such an amazingly supportive bunch of people. Not just my own group but people I’ve met from other groups and through social media too. Everyone and everything related to Slimming World oozes happiness and positivity. I owe so much to Slimming World. Even if you’re not aiming to lose weight, you should still have a nosey at their website. It’s filled with great, healthy recipe and snack ideas and lots of inspiration!
